How to Keep a Home Warm (Without Racking Up Your Heating Bill!)

It’s winter– how do you plan to keep your home warm?

We’ve all been there – looking at the heating bill after a long, cold month and wondering how you’ve racked up that much usage! While we can’t control the weather, especially in the unpredictable climate of Pennsylvania, we can do our best to eliminate winter weather from seeping into our homes and causing our furnaces to work overtime.

Additionally, some of these tips may be things you may not realize can actually impact the temperature of your home! At the end of the day, try these suggestions to take the strain off your furnace (and your wallet!)

1. Use rugs

Rugs are a great addition to any room, since they add a bit of flair to the style of the room. Definitely, they are great at keeping your home warm (and your feet!) as you walk through the room, especially if you have hardwood or tile flooring.

They are a great way to add a little bit more warmth to any room, especially if it’s one with high foot traffic. Walking on cold floors all day sure can get to you– even more so in the middle of the winter!

2. Check the furnace filter

As we highlighted in previous posts, checking your furnace filter is a great way to eliminate heating problems. If your home seems colder than it is supposed to be, changing the filter can be just the solution you need to get to feeling warm again.

And, as always, if you need assistance with this, TriangleAC is always willing to help! Simply fill out this form and we’ll be in touch with you. We’re happy to help you get your home warm in no time.

3. Let some light in

Natural lighting brings quite a bit of warmth to a home! Swap out those opaque curtains for some shorter ones or simply open the blinds up every once in a while.

Sunlight also makes us feel good. Soak up some rays and enjoy the sun’s warmth, even during the cooler months!

4. Drink tea

Tea is great when it comes to staying warm. Not only does it heat up your body, but boiling water can heat up the kitchen, too! This makes for the perfect cold-weather treat– and gives you some warmth in the process.

Additionally, tea has great health benefits. This is one of our favorite solutions for keeping your home warm without racking up your heating bill!

5. Check for drafts

If you can feel a breeze or colder air coming from the windows or doors in your home, you probably have a draft in the room. Luckily, there are ways to repair these so you don’t have to spend more money trying to heat the room twice.

Try turning off all appliances in the room that may let off some air when in use and light a candle. Hold the candle near the area you suspect there’s a breeze. If it flickers or goes out, it’s time to take action.

From caulk to draft stoppers, there are many solutions available to you to ensure you and your home is protected from additional heating costs due to drafts. Be proactive about them and it’ll save you in the long run!
