Is it time for a new furnace?

Heat is a necessity in any space. In these winter months, we’re experiencing rigid temperatures, causing our furnaces to work at maximum capacity. Now’s a good time to assess if it’s time for a new furnace, or if yours may need a quick tune-up.

Instead of raising your heating bill and overworking your furnace, reach out to the team at Triangle AC and see if you could benefit from using a new furnace in your space.

Here are some things to be on the lookout for in case you are considering upgrading your furnace.

The age of the furnace

The age of the heater is a key factor in deciding whether or not a furnace is still running efficiently or if it’s coming to the end of its life.  As with any type of equipment, it will not run as efficiently as it did the year you bought it versus a decade or two later.  The average lifespan of a heater is 15 to 20 years, however, it may even last longer if you keep it in the best condition possible.

Your furnace’s AFUE rating

As we’ve mentioned before, your unit has an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). This is the best way to see just how efficient your unit is operating. The AFUE measures how your heater turns fuel into energy.

Inefficiency is usually found with older models. A typical rule of thumb is this rating decreases by 5% with every year of use. Older models can sometimes convert about 50-60% of fuel into energy – meaning you’re missing half of the energy!
