Pre-Season Furnace Checkup: What You Can Do at Home (and When to Call a Pro)
Before Pittsburgh’s first cold snap arrives, a little furnace prep goes a long way. Here’s what you can tackle yourself, and where a professional tune-up picks up where the DIY checklist leaves off.
What You Can Do at Home
- Replace your air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and puts unnecessary strain on your system. Check it before the season starts and plan to replace it every 1–3 months throughout winter.
- Test your thermostat. Switch to heat mode and set it above the current room temperature. If the system doesn’t kick on within a few minutes, start by checking the settings and batteries.
- Clear your vents. Make sure all supply and return vents throughout your home are open and unobstructed; furniture and rugs pushed up against vents are a common cause of uneven heating.
- Check your carbon monoxide detectors. Test every CO detector before heating season begins and replace batteries as needed. If your detectors are more than 5-7 years old, it’s time for new ones.
- Clear the area around your furnace. Make sure the space around your furnace is free of clutter and anything flammable. Proper clearance is essential for safe operation.
What a Professional Tune-Up Covers
The steps above are great for everyday upkeep, but a professional inspection goes deeper. During a Triangle HVAC furnace tune-up, our technicians will:
- Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks that could allow carbon monoxide into your home
- Clean and test burners for reliable, efficient startup
- Check flue and venting for blockages or damage
- Inspect electrical connections and controls
- Calibrate your thermostat for accurate performance
Annual maintenance improves efficiency, extends the life of your system, and catches small issues before they turn into costly mid-winter repairs.
Homeowners enrolled in a Triangle HVAC Maintenance Agreement receive scheduled seasonal visits and priority service, so you’re never left in the cold when you need us most.
