With temperatures climbing into the high 80s across Pittsburgh this week, your air conditioner is working hard. But what if it’s running constantly and your home still doesn’t feel cool? A system that’s on but underperforming can be just as frustrating as one that won’t turn on at all.

Here’s what might be going on, and what to do about it.

 

Start With the Simple Stuff

Before assuming the worst, a few quick checks can rule out easy fixes:

  1. Replace your air filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow significantly. If yours is overdue, a fresh filter can make an immediate difference.
  1. Check your thermostat settings: Make sure it’s set to “cool” and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temp. Also confirm the fan is set to “auto” rather than “on”; a fan running constantly can circulate warm air and make it feel like your system isn’t cooling.
  2. Check your vents: Walk through your home and make sure all supply and return vents are fully open and unobstructed by furniture or curtains.
  3. Look at your outdoor unit: Make sure the condenser has clear space around it and that the fan is running. Debris, overgrown plants, or restricted airflow around the unit can significantly reduce performance.

 

Signs Something More Is Going On

If the basics check out but your home still isn’t comfortable, it may be time to call a professional. Watch for:

  • Warm or barely cool air coming from vents despite the system running
  • Ice buildup on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil- a sign of restricted airflow or low refrigerant
  • Unusual sounds like grinding, rattling, or squealing
  • Weak airflow from some or all vents
  • Rising energy bills without a change in usage

What Could Be Causing It

A few common culprits behind a system that runs without fully cooling your home:

  • Low refrigerant: If your system is low on refrigerant, often due to a slow leak, it can’t transfer heat the way it’s designed to. This is something our technicians diagnose and resolve during a service visit, and it’s also one of the key checks included in our maintenance agreement.

  • An aging or undersized system: Older systems lose efficiency and may simply struggle to keep up on the hottest days, even when they’re technically still running.
